Elite Eli returns to radio as champion

Eli Manning was asked by Michael Kay on “The Michael Kay Show” in training camp if he was an elite quarterback. His response was yes, he did see himself in the same class as Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and big brother Peyton. And although he caught some flack for that, it turns out that Eli was right.

Speaking again on the “The Michael Kay Show” on ESPN Radio in his weekly time slot yesterday, Manning had a lot to say.

“I didn’t appreciate the first question you asked me in training camp if I was elite, but it all worked out,” Manning said. “I was a little tired this morning, not much sleep, had a late night with friends, families, teammates and coaches celebrating the win. Came to Disney and saw all the kids and New York supporters. Looking forward to getting back to New York and getting some rest and getting fired up for one more parade [today] that will be a great experience.”

It was the second time in four years that Manning led the Giants on an 80-plus scoring drive for the winning score in the final minutes of the Super Bowl. Manning continued to do what he had all season long: make big plays when it mattered most.

“You prepare for those moments. We’ve been down at times in the fourth quarter, but you have to lead your team to victory,” he said. “We have a great feel for what plays we’re going to run. Nothing has to be said when we go out there and prepare for that last drive.”

The 21-17 win over the Patriots was just as dramatic as the 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII. Manning was as nervous as the millions watching that last-second Hail Mary attempt by Brady.

“You’re kind of hoping it’s underthrown. Obviously we know a little about Hail Marys,” Manning said, referring to his completion to Hakeem Nicks as time expired in the first half of the Divisional round against the Packers.

Manning compared the two Super Bowls, saying he was happy for his teammates such as Nicks and Victor Cruz.

“It is a little bit different feeling. Four years ago, you are going through it for the first time. This time, it is very gratifying, but I think you start thinking about other guys a little more” he said. “Guys who are getting their first chance, kind of remembering what I had four years ago.”
