PORT ST. LUCIE — Ike Davis’ departure from spring training was short-lived.
The Mets first baseman is scheduled to resume workouts today, after traveling to New York for what the team yesterday called a continuation of his physical.
A team spokesman said Davis’ trip had nothing to do with the ankle injury that sidelined him for most of last season. Manager Terry Collins said Davis has been cleared for spring training.
Mets players underwent physicals on Tuesday at the team’s spring training complex.
* The Mets will be among the teams with a scout in Houston tomorrow to watch Scott Kazmir throw.
The 28-year-old, whom the Mets infamously traded to Tampa Bay in 2004 as part of a deal for Victor Zambrano, is attempting a comeback after spending most of last season in the minor leagues with velocity and control problems.
* The first day of batting practice on Field 7 — which has been configured to replicate the new dimensions at Citi Field — was a hit. Lucas Duda hit several mammoth blasts, but David Wright and Daniel Murphy also enjoyed the shorter fences.
“Today shows you there’s a big difference,” Collins said. “It’s going to change the way these guys think when they’re at home plate.”
Murphy indicated it might take awhile for the Mets to truly embrace the new dimensions.
“I think maybe early on it’s not something you will think about too much, until you hit that ball you’re not used to getting out of the ballpark,” Murphy said. “Then you’ll be like, ‘Alright, I don’t have to kill it.’ But it looks like it plays pretty fair out there and we’re all excited.”
* Team COO Jeff Wilpon recently told NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver the Mets want their own Jeremy Lin. Silver provided a shred of hope for Wilpon: “He told me [Lin] has got a brother in dental school and he hears that he can hit the curveball,” Wilpon said.
* Johan Santana is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today, but will be excused from fielding drills to prepare for his mound work.
