A new Prospect Park redesign limiting car traffic to one lane was met with mixed reviews tonight, with many locals expressing disappointment that motorists weren’t completely banned from the urban oasis.
Over 100 people attended a meeting inside the park’s picturesque Picnic House for the official unveiling of the changes, which also include designated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists.
Many called the proposal — agreed upon by a task force of community leaders and city agencies — a good start, but expressed disappointment that cars were still allowed in.
“The long-term goal is a car free park and we won’t stop until we get there,” said one speaker.
A small minority said the problem was cyclists.
“I can’t even cross the street with my dog without getting cursed at by bikers,” said Mary Bcdel-Kleiner.
The changes were designed to increase safety in the park following a series of accidents. They will be implemented in the spring.
