Mets’ Pelfrey successful with sinker

PORT ST. LUCIE — Mike Pelfrey’s goals are simple this year: Keep the ball in the park and runners from stealing against him.

It was mission accomplished for the Mets right-hander yesterday, with two hitless innings pitched in an intrasquad scrimmage at Digital Domain Park.

Pelfrey’s sinker was biting, albeit against a largely Triple-A lineup. A more significant test will come Thursday, when he faces the Marlins.

“Last year, I thought I gave up way too many home runs, and I don’t think that’s me,” said Pelfrey, who surrendered 21 homers in 193 2/3 innings. “Keep the ball in the ballpark and keep that guy on first if I want to turn the double play.

“I went into the offseason doing everything I could — arm angle, different grips, trying to find it. I found something I’m comfortable with and I’m pretty pleased with the movement on it.”

* Dillon Gee, Matt Harvey and Frank Francisco are among the Mets pitchers scheduled for action against the Nationals tonight. Johan Santana remains on track to start tomorrow against the Cardinals.

* Single-game tickets for the regular season will go on sale today at 10 a.m. at Mets.com or by calling (718) 507-TIXX.
