Giants put franchise tag on punter Weatherford

The Giants have placed their franchise tag on punter Steve Weatherford, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent March 13.

Weatherford wants to re-sign with the Giants after an outstanding first season with them and has hinted he’s close to agreeing to a multiyear deal. Apparently no deal has been reached yet, but the franchise tag ensures Weatherford will be with the Giants at least through the 2012 season. The franchise tag for punters means Weatherford will make about $2.5 million for next season.

The tag does not mean the Giants will not come up with a long-term deal for Weatherford. The last time the Giants used their franchise tag, on Brandon Jacobs, they reached a contract agreement 12 days later.
