Bloomberg says Tebow will ‘make things interesting’ for Jets

Newly acquired Jets quarterback Tim Tebow today landed himself an important blocker: Mayor Bloomberg.

“Tebow is certainly going to make things interesting and breed new excitement,” the mayor declared on his weekly WOR Radio show.

Some Jets fans have questioned whether the acquisition of Tebow as the team’s backup quarterback will undercut current quarterback Mark Sanchez.

In the past, Bloomberg had made it clear he’s in Sanchez’s corner.

When superstar QB Peyton Manning was still a free agent a couple of weeks ago, the mayor suggested the Jets not recruit him because that would mean bye-bye for Sanchez.

“Keep in mind the Jets have a young quarterback in Mark Sanchez and he nearly led his team to the Super Bowl twice,” the mayor said then.

But Bloomberg didn’t get a chance to weigh in on a possible Sanchez-Tebow showdown because he spent so much time joking about football fantasy.

“I would have thought that if they wanted to have a backup for Mark Sanchez all they would have to do is call me,” Bloomberg said from Vietnam, tongue firmly in cheek. “You know it’s only 13 Sundays. I can do it while I’m still mayor.”

Bloomberg flew to Singapore this week to pick up a $230,000 environmental prize for the city and dropped by Vietnam to promote his foundation’s anti-smoking initiatives.
