The highly-anticipated film adaptation of the best-selling novel earned more at midnight than “The Dark Knight” did in the summer of 2008. That film opened with $18.5 million at midnight before earning $158 million for the second-highest opening weekend of all time.

“The Hunger Games” is primed for “a weekend tally that will rank among some of the top debuts of all time,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com’s box-office division. Experts are estimating that its weekend total could be $130-140 million, making it the biggest March opener of all time.
