PSAL girls basketball rankings

Three champions were crowned as we finish up another season.

Murry Bergtraum was on top of the PSAL once again, taking home its 14th straight city title by beating McKee/Staten Island Tech on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. The Lady Blazers overcame so much adversity and managed to be the best team once again.

In the ‘A’ title game, Curtis routed Goldstein for its first championship since 2008. Scholars Academy won its second straight Class B title in just three varsity seasons. All three of these teams will compete this weekend in the New York State Federation tournament in Albany representing the PSAL.

1. Murry Bergtraum (18-7) (Last week: 1)

The Lady Blazers just continue to top themselves. The degree of difficulty this year was at its highest point after the death of star player Tayshana (Chicken) Murphy in September. Bergtraum had to fight back the emotions of such a terrible tragedy, somehow focus on basketball and Saturday the program won its 14th straight PSAL city title, beating MSIT at MSG.

Next: Nazareth/Cicero-North Syracuse, NYS Federation Class AA final (March 25, 12 p.m.)

2. MSIT (21-3) (2)

McKee/Staten Island Tech had a one-point lead on Murry Bergtraum for almost three whole minutes of the fourth quarter Saturday in the PSAL Class AA city title game at Madison Square Garden. But the Seagulls never extended the lead and that came back to bite them. Still, this group will always be remembered for being the second Staten Island girls team to reach MSG.

3. South Shore (21-5) (3)

It’s going to be a long offseason in Canarsie. Gone next year to graduation will be VCU-bound Jenice Winter and Marshall-bound Fannisha Price, but South Shore will still have freshman budding star Briann Fraser, sharpshooter Aliyah Cooley and some talented young guards.

4. Francis Lewis (14-9) (4)

This current era of Francis Lewis girls basketball is over. Tyese Purvis, Jasmine Davis, Erica Ward and Jazmine Hamlet will all graduate, leaving a massive void in Fresh Meadows that will have to be filled in part by budding freshman Robyn Francis.

5. Truman (20-7) (5)

Krystal Pearson, the player who brought Truman to citywide prominence, will graduate in the spring, as will point guard Lynda Fields. The Mustangs will belong largely to Lisa Fields, Lynda’s sister, and budding star Daquana Smith beginning next year.

6. John F. Kennedy (17-10) (6)

Zakiya Mason and Amely Del Rosario will be the players to watch next year with almost the entire core graduating. Joya McFarland, Deaisia Acklin, Leshauna Phinazee, Chelsea Custodio and Robin Daley, the group that carried Kennedy for years, will depart.

7. Lincoln (12-9) (7)

The ball will be Simone Roberts’ hands next year and she is willing and able. Lincoln will not be the same without Chestnut Hill-bound star Erica Juarbe and scorer Shaquella Figueroa – the Railsplitters will need a big season from Janera Roper, who has shown flashes of brilliance.

8. Curtis (21-8) (8)

Goldstein had absolutely no answer for Kristen Olsen, Danielle Leguillou, Jessica Rosalbo, Shannon McGill and the whole cast of characters. In this group’s first season at Curtis, it won the PSAL Class A title in impressive fashion. Legendary coach Bob Daggett will make his first trip to the New York State Federation tournament since 2006 with St. Peter’s.

Next: Loughlin/Rochester East, NYS Federation Class A final (March 24, 12:15 p.m. @ Times Union Center)

9. Midwood (9-15) (9)

The Hornets don’t lose a single player of significance from this team, which went to the PSAL Class AA quarterfinals. Monet Keane Dawes and Camera Miley lead a talented group of returning girls, which also features Amina Markovic and Kyla Formey.

10. Goldstein (23-3) (10)

It wasn’t quite the ending the Dolphins, led by Brittany McDonough and Nora Elbassiony, expected. Goldstein had visions of winning a second PSAL title in three years after taking home the ‘B’ crown two seasons ago. But Curtis was simply too much and the girls from Brooklyn were out of the game by the second quarter in a disappointing performance.
