Chargers not interested in Jets RB Tomlinson

LaDainian Tomlinson was not shy about discussing the Jets’ locker room woes in interviews after the season, and he is unlikely to return to the team he’s played for the past two seasons.

The Chargers, the team he left for the Jets, also are not interested in reuniting with the veteran running back.

“No. We have moved on years ago,” Chargers GM A.J. Smith told the San Diego Union Tribune.

“We wish him the very best in his search for the team he feels is the best fit for him. We are looking at four backs right now but we may slow down that search a little bit.”

The questions about the Chargers backfield came after Mike Tolbert decided to leave San Diego to sign a four-year deal with the Panthers.

Tomlinson, 32, signed with the Jets after the 2009 season. In his first season he emerged as the Jets featured back with 914 yards on 219 carries, but his role was reduced last season with him gaining 280 yards on 75 carries.

Smith took the opportunity to take a jab at Jets coach Rex Ryan, who is always complimentary of his players.

“I know Rex Ryan has said some great things about LT the last couple years,” Smith said. “I would think he would bring him back.”

But the Jets are instead interested in Patriots running back Benjarvus Green-Ellis to complement Shonn Greene. After the season, Tomlinson went on Showtime’s “Inside the NFL” and offered his opinion what went wrong for the Jets during their 8-8 season.

“You know it was at the point where I think the players could no longer do anything about it,” said Tomlinson, who is not expected to retire. “There was nothing that the players could do. So when it gets to that point there are certain changes that need to happen. Can it be fixed? I think absolutely it can be. But they’re going to have to make some tough decisions.”
