Cop in 50-shot killing of unarmed Sean Bell to be fired

An undercover officer who fired the first bullets in a 50-shot barrage that killed an unarmed New York City man following his bachelor party will be fired.

A New York Police Department official in charge of discipline recommended in November that Detective Gescard Isnora be fired.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Friday, “There was nothing in the record to warrant overturning the decision.”

The departmental trial judge determined that Isnora acted improperly when he fired 11 shots at the car carrying Sean Bell. The 23-year-old was killed and two friends seriously injured. No weapon was found in Bell’s car.

Isnora’s lawyer told The New York Times that the decision to fire the officer was “extremely disheartening.”

Isnora and two other officers were acquitted of criminal charges in 2008.
