Cop shoots suspect after he fires on officer in Harlem

A suspect was shot by a uniformed NYPD officer in Harlem this evening after the man fired two rounds at the officer, law enforcement sources said.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Frederick Douglass Boulevard near West 143rd Street, authorities said.

Officers approached a group of six to eight men when alleged gunman Franklyn Nunez, 23, took off, police said. Nunez then turned and fired, according to police.

No one was struck and one cop, a rookie Operation Impact officer from the 32nd Precinct, returned fire with at least two shots, sources said. Operation Impact is an NYPD program that assigns extra police to high-crime areas.

Nunez was hit in his chest and thigh and rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he is in stable condition. He had recently completed a two-year prison term for an unknown offense.

Nunez’s .45-caliber Colt 1911 handgun and two shell casings were recovered from the scene. The weapon was reported stolen from North Carolina last November, sources said.

The officer was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for trauma.
