City reverses Tyrannosaurus nix on school tests

After a tsunami of public outcry, city education officials said they would no longer specify that test-makers exclude topics such as death, dancing and dinosaurs from city exams.

The move came just days before Passover, Good Friday and Easter — all taboo topics because of their religious nature — and one week after The Post first exposed the list of 50 forbidden terms.

Topics such as birthdays, creatures from outer space and homes with swimming pools had been nixed from tests in all grades because of concerns about bias or kids’ potential sensitivities.

Department of Education Chief Academic Officer Shael Polakow-Suransky said officials would continue to ask vendors to be sensitive to students’ backgrounds and avoid “unnecessary distractions” on exams — a common industry practice — but no longer by specifying taboo terms.

“After reconsidering our message to test publishers and the reaction from parents, we will revise our guidance and eliminate the list of words to avoid on tests,” he said.
