Boys lacrosse roundup: Poly tops Collegiate, finds offensive flow

Poly Prep wasn’t pleased with its offensive production in the early season. The Blue Devils scored just three times in a loss to Riverdale in their opener and had the same number of goals early in the second half against Collegiate.

“We wanted to get the momentum going in this game,” senior midfielder Sam Bernstein said. “We came together at halftime and said, ‘This has got to stop. We can’t be doing this.’ We kind of hit our potential in the third quarter.”

The Blue Devils scored 10 straight times, including seven after the break to pull away for a 15-5 win over visiting Collegiate in Ivy League boys lacrosse Wednesday. Bernstein scored four times, including the first two of the second half. Max Goupit tallied five goals and Hugo Francis had two goals and an assists for Poly (1-1), the defending NYSAISAA champions. Kyle Vogel scored twice and dished out three assists and Anthony Reyes had a goal and a helper. Carter Lewis paced Collegiate (0-2) with threes scores and an assist and Anthony’s Evan chipped in two goals.

“We spread it out and we moved the ball,” Poly coach Brooks Sweet said.

Sweet believes his team’s patience and ball movement need to improve, starting with his best players in Francis and Goupit. He Bernstein took advantage of Collegiate’s mistakes when Poly was patient on offense. Blue Devils backup goalie Dustin Foote more than held his own in place of injured starter Dylan Moser and made 10 saves.

“It’s not just the saves,” Sweet said. “He’s patient with the ball after he made the save and we cleared the ball very well today.”

Poly hopes it’s finally cleared past its offensive woes and found its continuity heading into a big game against Fieldston in The Bronx on Friday.

“I think we need this momentum,” Bernstein said. “I feel confident going in. I have faith in the boys.”

Fieldston 11, Trinity 6: Tanner Morris tallied five goals and added an assist for Fieldston (2-0). Grady Smith and Jake Schneider each had a goal and two assist. Daniel Locker made 14 saves. Trinity is 0-2.

Dalton 7, Riverdale 5: Ben Vallimaresu had five goals and Jason Shein added two for Dalton (1-0). Daniel Katzman made 11 saves. Josh Wexlar-Waite, Jake Margolis and Dan Maffezzoli each had a goal and an assists for Riverdale (1-1).
