Injured Mets 3B Wright could play tonight vs. Phillies

It’s still wait-and-see for the Mets about David Wright’s availability.

Wright’s visit to a hand specialist yesterday produced “good” news, according to a team source, in that his fractured right pinky isn’t any worse than originally thought. But it remains to be seen if Wright will need an extended absence from the lineup.

Wright broke the finger diving back into first base on a pickoff attempt Monday night. He struggled to grip a bat the following day and was subsequently scratched from the lineup.

The Mets released a statement yesterday saying Wright can return to baseball activity “as tolerated.” A second source indicated Wright may attempt to take batting practice tonight in Philadelphia and a decision on his availability would follow.

Ronny Cedeno has played third base the last two games and likely would remain in that spot if Wright is close to returning. But if Wright needs a disabled-list stint, the team could slide Daniel Murphy to third base and play Justin Turner at second.

* R.A. Dickey has struggled in his two career starts with the Mets at Citizens Bank Park, going 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA. The Phillies hit .390 against Dickey in those two appearances.

Dickey will be working on five days’ rest after allowing two runs in a victory over the Braves last Saturday.
