Osi says ‘no anger’ over contract with Giants

Osi Umenyiora is still waiting for the Giants to give him a contract extension. But the two-time Pro Bowl and All-Pro selection is realistic about the situation as he enters the final season of his deal.

“There’s no anger,” Umenyiora said at an event at an NFL pop-up store in Midtown. “The anger was more, maybe, 2009? . . . That’s when I was pretty frustrated. But, at this point, I’m resigned to whatever’s gonna happen.

“I know what I see myself as. I know what I perceive my value to be, and if they don’t see it that way, I completely understand. As you get older, you start to see it for what it really is. It’s a business.”

Umenyiora has a decision to make about whether to attend the team’s voluntary offseason program, which begins on Monday. The defensive end said he had made up his mind, but didn’t say what that would be.

At the NFL scouting combine in February, Giants general manager Jerry Reese said an extension for Umenyiora “could happen.” Now, Umenyiora is waiting to see if it will.

“I heard it, but . . . you can say things,” he said. “I’ve said a lot of things. Until it happens . . . I guess it’s just talk until it’s actually been done. Nothing has happened yet, and hopefully something will get done, but you never really know.”

One thing Umenyiora said he has learned is that he won’t be getting anything for his past performances.

“They don’t owe anybody anything,” he said. “It’s all business. That’s pretty much it. You sign a contract, they cut you, they release you, they do whatever. Man, it’s all business.’’

Umenyiora had an injury-plagued 2011 season, but still managed nine sacks in nine games and was a key component of the team’s run to the Super Bowl. The injuries led to him spending a lot of the time backing up defensive ends Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul.

“It worked for us last year,” he said. “Obviously I was coming off an injury, but I see myself as a starter in the NFL . . . I see myself as a Pro Bowl-type player. That’s the way I see myself.’’
