Mets 3B Wright facing tough foe today

David Wright has struggled against Tim Lincecum perhaps more than against any other active pitcher.

Wright is just 2-for-17 (.118) with 11 strikeouts and two walks in his career against the Giants righty, who will start this afternoon against the Mets at Citi Field. Wright doesn’t have any extra-base hits off Lincecum either.

The only pitcher Wright has a worse average against in that many plate appearances is Boston’s Josh Beckett. Wright is 1-for-18 (.056) in 20 plate appearances off the Red Sox righty. But he has struck out only three times against Beckett.

Lincecum, the two-time Cy Young winner, has struggled this season and sports an 0-2 record and 10.54 ERA in three starts.

Wright went 0-for-4 in yesterday’s 5-4 win, ending his 13-game hitting streak (10 games this year, three last year).

METS BOX SCORE

* Mets pitching prospect Jenrry Mejia, who had Tommy John surgery last season, recently pitched in an extended spring game. The 22-year-old right-hander had his operation last May 16.

Mejia is considered one of the Mets’ elite pitching prospects. along with Wheeler, Matt Harvey and Jeurys Familia.

* For the second time since being recalled, Kirk Nieuwenhuis batted leadoff yesterday, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts. Does the rookie center fielder eventually profile as a top-of-the-order hitter or a middle-of-the-lineup bat?

“That’s a legitimate question,” Terry Collins said. “I really don’t know.”

* Ike Davis kept struggling, going 1-for-4 with an infield single while striking out twice. His average is .148 through 14 games.

Collins said the Mets don’t have any other real cleanup options to even temporarily alleviate Davis’ burden. Said the manger, “I told him I’d move him and let him relax, but I haven’t got anyone else to put in that spot either.”
