Double down: Conn. man busted for stealing scrap metal — twice in one day

PLAINFIELD, Conn. — A Connecticut man was facing criminal charges Sunday after being arrested twice on the same day for stealing scrap metal, The Hartford Courant reported.

A woman driving through Plainfield called police when she saw two young men walking around with scrap metal and apparently casing local residences at around 5:30am local time Saturday.

Officers arrived on the scene to find 18-year-old Robert Authelet and a 17-year-old male, who was not identified, carrying rain gutters and spouts. Police determined that they had been stolen from Authelet’s neighbors and that he planned to sell them as scrap metal.

Authelet was arrested, but released without posting his $500 bail, according to The Courant.

Police received another report of a scrap metal theft shortly after 7:00pm Saturday.

Officers investigated and found that Authelet had stolen copper piping from another residence while the teen waited outside.

Authelet was charged with third-degree burglary and two counts each of sixth-degree larceny and third-degree criminal mischief.

His accomplice was hit with charges of third-degree conspiracy to commit burglary, third-degree conspiracy to commit criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

Authelet is scheduled to appear in court May 7, The Courant reported.
