In its April 16 editorial, “Charter Challenge,” The Post takes a preemptive and unfounded strike at my appointment of Dr. Kenneth P. O’Brien as chair of the SUNY Board of Trustees’ Education, College Readiness and Success Committee, which oversees SUNY-authorized charter schools.
As a member of the committee for the past three years, O’Brien has a track record of objectivity. He’s actively participated in applicant interviews, exhibited a genuine concern for the development of successful schools and approved all of the applications that have come before the board.
Upholding SUNY’s prominent global reputation as a leading charter-school authorizer is a challenging task.
O’Brien is a professor and scholar who has devoted his career to public education, and he is the right man for the job.
To be sure, his appointment was a carefully considered decision made with the best interests of New York’s education system and its students in mind.
I encourage all of New York to watch O’Brien in this new role and give him a chance.
