Laughing at Fidel: NY fest stars ‘defect’ — as in their film

GREAT ESCAPE: Javier Nunez Florian (left) and Anailin de la Rua De la Torre, who play Cuban teen defectors, could be seeking asylum in the United States.

They sure took their roles to heart.

Two Cuban actors who were supposed to be on their way to the TriBeCa Film Festival in New York — for a screening of their flick about teens defecting from Cuba to the United States — mysteriously disappeared in Miami last week and may now seek asylum themselves.

“To be sincere, I think they’re going to stay’’ in the United States, admitted the pair’s “Una Noche’’ co-star Dariel Arrechada, 20, to the Huffington Post.

The on-the-lam actors, Anailin de la Rua De la Torre and Javier Nunez Florian, both 20, had flown with Arrechada from Cuba to Miami on Wednesday for a short stopover.

But by the time their plane was to take off again for New York, De la Torre and Florian were no-shows.

Arrechada said he separated from the pair at the Miami airport when they said they wanted to do some shopping — and that was the last he saw of them.

“I really was thinking that they were going to come here and enjoy the festival,’’ said the indie film’s British-born director, Lucy Mulloy, who graduated from New York University’s film school.

Saying she was “disappointed” by the two actors’ decision, Mulloy added, “They had all of their family there, and it’s surprising.

“But things can be difficult in Cuba. There’s an embargo and so there’s a lot of challenges for people living in Cuba.”

Migdalia Travis, a spokeswoman for Customs and Border Protection, said she couldn’t comment on whether the pair had sought asylum, citing federal privacy laws. The actors have visas that allow them to stay here for the duration of the festival, which ends Sunday. Arrechada said he plans to head home as soon as the festival wraps up.

“ ‘Una Noche’ tells the story of three frustrated Cuban teens who dream of escaping to Florida,” according to a synopsis on the festival’s Web site.

In the movie, De la Torre and Florian play Lila and Elio, siblings who flee the island with Arrechada’s character, Raul, after Raul is accused of assault and fears punishment by authorities.

The film debuted Thursday and screens again at 3:45 p.m. today at the Clearview Cinema Chelsea on West 23rd Street.
