Truly art of the steal

Adam Simon, a Brooklyn artist, knew when he began a series of paintings featuring the message “STEAL THIS ART” that someone would heed the message.

Four of the works have been pilfered, the last one disappearing from the walls of Momenta Art on April 15 while Simon and 50 art, poetry and literature lovers were enjoying the afternoon at the Williamsburg gallery.

“There were 203 artworks on display,” said Simon. “Now there’s 202.”

He said he wasn’t really surprised. “It is an invitation,” Simon, 59, said.

The painting recalls the 1960s Yippie leader Abbie Hoffman’s paperback “Steal This Book.”
