Hundreds show for Bronx crash victims’ wake

Hundreds of mourners filed past seven open caskets arranged in a circle to pay their respects today to the victims of Sunday’s deadly crash on the Bronx River Parkway.

The six women who were killed were all dressed in white, with simple white flower arrangements the only adornments on their caskets.

“I’m hurting right now, but I’m going to be OK,” said a grieving Juan Gonzalez, whose wife Maria “Fina” Gonzalez, 45, and daughter Jazyln, 10, were both killed.

Some of the mourners reached into the caskets to touch the arms or hands of the three little girls who were killed.

Others cried openly at the somber scene, their sobs the only sound breaking the stillness of the room.

Many stopped to pray as they filed by, blessing themselves with the sign of the cross.

“The family wasn’t prepared for this. A lot of tears are being shed in there right now,” said family friend David Rodriguez, 29, thanking New Yorkers for being supportive.

“This is something that has affected the entire community and the entire city. Seven people gone in just a couple seconds.”

Hundreds of mourners gathered at the Parkchester Funeral Home on Unionport Road, where the line of people waiting to pay their respects stretched around the block.

Gonzalez and Ramon Rosario – who lost his wife Maria “Nelly” Nunez, 35, and daughters Niely, 7, and Marly, 3 – were seated on a couch near the caskets, stoically greeting mourners as they filed past.

Also killed were the dead women’s parent Ana Julia Martinez, 81, an, Jacob Nunez, 85, who wore a dark suit.

The elderly couple arrived April 26 for a visit from the family’s native Dominican Republic after Jazlyn had invited them to come to her First Communion, which was to be Saturday.

Instead, she will be buried in the dress her family had bought her for the happy occasion.

The deadly wreck occurred Sunday at 12:30 p.m. when a speeding Honda Pilot driven by Gonzalez veered into the center median divider, flew across three lanes and was launched over a 4-foot guardrail.

The SUV plummeted 60 feet to a secluded area of the Bronx Zoo, and the seven passengers were all killed instantly.

On Wednesday, state DOT officials ordered that taller guardrails be installed on the section of the parkway over the Amtrak rail yard.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m., today at Saint Raymond’s Church in the Bronx.
