‘Murphy Brown’ revival could be in the works

LOS ANGELES — “Murphy Brown,” the sitcom about a no-nonsense investigative journalist, could be slated to return to CBS for a series of specials in time for the US presidential election.

Diane English, the show’s creator, revealed, “I’d love to have the show back on during this election year,” at the TV Land Awards, where the series received the Impact Award.

The show starring Candice Bergen ran on CBS from 1988 to 1998, with plots that often weaved in real-time political headlines.

“We’re having a little conversation with CBS about a few episodes, and I think it’s possible. Candice knows about it, and we’re going to talk to her more in July once she wraps her Broadway play [‘The Best Man,’]” English added to TV Guide.

The 65-year-old actress, who suffered a stroke in 2006, is currently starring in the Broadway revival of Gore Vidal’s political drama.

The cast of the CBS comedy reunited earlier in April, when the TV Land Awards were taped, and spoke to ABC’s “Good Morning America” about the ground-breaking show.

Bergen, whose character was modeled to be “Mike Wallace in a dress” said the show was a pioneer among TV programs at the time, with storylines that were “brilliant, just so informed and smart.”
