Babe Ruth’s Yankees cap up for auction

Boomer’s Babe Ruth cap is going, going, gone to the auction block.

The Bambino’s 1934 Yankees hat — famously donned by Bombers hurler David “Boomer” Wells in a 1997 game — is expected to go for at least $300,000, auctioneers said Monday.

“It has been an honor to be the caretaker of his Yankees cap for all these years,” Wells said in a statement from SCP Auctions in Laguna Niguel, Calif.

“I’ll never forget what a thrill it was to honor the Babe by bringing the cap back to Yankee Stadium and wearing it on the mound.”

Wells, a devoted Ruth fan, wore the cap on June 28, 1997, for a game against the Cleveland Indians.

Then-manager Joe Torre ordered his hefty lefty take if off after one inning, fearing baseball would come down on the Yanks or Wells for violating uniform rules.

Ruth’s size-7 ⅜3/8 navy blue “NY” cap is made of flannel. Modern Yankees caps are an even darker blue, virtually black, and were made of wool in Wells’ playing days.

“The condition is amazing. It has all the wear you want — sweat underneath, in the head band,” said SCP president David Kohler.

“You don’t want a perfect, mint cap.”

The auction house opened bidding and the online sale goes through May 19. Other notable items in this baseball sale include:

• A 1920 Yankees jersey worn by Ruth is expected to fetch more than $1 million.

• The cap worn by Bobby Thomson when he slugged, arguably, baseball’s most famous home run, could go for $100,000. The Flying Scot’s “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” won the 1951 National League pennant for his New York Giants.

• The 1968 road Yankees jersey, worn by Mickey Mantle when he hit career homer No. 535, should also reach six digits.

• The baseball card collection of former All-Star Dmitri Young includes mint-condition rookie cards of Roberto Clemente, Henry Aaron, Pete Rose and Reggie Jackson. This auction for 491 cards, sold as individual lots, ends on May 18, one day ahead of all the other items.

Young’s younger brother, Delmon, was busted in New York last week after allegedly going off on an anti-Semitic outburst in Midtown.
