Jets’ McKnight 15 pounds heavier after ‘a lot of McDonalds’

Running back Joe McKnight has added 15 pounds in the offseason, hoping to prove he can be a between-the-tackles runner.

“Man, a lot of McDonald’s,” he said when asked how he gained the weight.

McKnight said he is now 216 pounds but expects to play between 205-210 this year. McKnight said he packed on the calories, then lifted weights to turn them into muscle.

“I ate healthy, but the majority of the time I was eating bad,” he said. “I ain’t going to say I was eating healthy like I was eating all the right stuff like Tim Tebow.”

* Second-year nose tackle Kenrick Ellis would not comment on whether he will have to miss practice time because of his scheduled trial on charges of malicious wounding in Hampton, Va., next week.

Ellis repeatedly said “it’s a pending legal matter” before a Jets PR official stepped in to end that line of questioning.

Ellis was arrested in April 2010. The trial has been postponed twice. There is a pretrial hearing scheduled for today with the trial set to begin Tuesday.

* Outside linebacker Bryan Thomas, who tore his left Achilles’ tendon in October, said he is running close to full speed and expects to be ready for training camp in July.
