Cory Booker’s communications director resigns after ‘Meet the Press’ flap

Newark Mayor Cory Booker’s communications director is resigning, PolitickerNJ reported Tuesday.

Anne Torres’ resignation comes after Booker came under fire for telling NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the Obama campaign’s tactic of attacking Mitt Romney’s tenure at private equity firm Bain Capital was “nauseating” and made him “very uncomfortable.”

“I decided it is best if I pursued other opportunities,” Torres told The Star-Ledger. “We have very different views on how communications should be run.”

Booker, an Obama campaign surrogate, later attempted to clarify his remarks in a three-minute video, but he was blasted by President Barack Obama’s chief election strategist David Axelrod, who said he was “wrong” to criticize the attacks.

Booker’s chief of staff Modia Butler told PolitickerNJ the resignation was “an amicable decision reached by both Anne Torres and our administration.” Butler told The Star-Ledger the move “has nothing to do with ‘Meet the Press.'”
