Five different Mets have at least 150 at-bats this year. Scott Hairston isn’t in that group. He doesn’t even have 100 yet.
But Hairston has a team-high six home runs in his 91 at-bats after last night’s two-run pinch-hit blast in the Mets’ 6-3 win over the Phillies. The outfielder has homered in each of his last three games covering eight at-bats.
Apparently, Hairston’s now Josh Hamilton.
“Doesn’t matter who he’s facing, righties or lefties, he’s hitting the ball out of the park,” Ike Davis said. “It feels like every at-bat he’s going to hit a home run.”
Last night, Hairston delivered insurance, pinch-hitting for starter Jeremy Hefner in the sixth inning with a runner on second and the Mets leading 4-3. Hefner already had delivered a stunning homer — the pitcher’s first major league hit — so Hairston had something to live up to.
“I was like, ‘Wow, I’m pinch-hitting for a guy that just went deep,’ ” Hairston said jokingly.
Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton was pitching, and though Hairston had been a menace against lefties this year (.321, five homers), he had hit a measly .147 (5-for-34) off righties with no homers and 13 strikeouts.
But manager Terry Collins said he went to Hairston because of his past success versus Blanton — 3-for-7 with a homer and a double. And on a 3-2 pitch, Hairston smacked a two-run shot over the left-field wall for a 6-3 lead.
Hairston, who turned 32 last week, has shown impressive power in the past, drilling 17 homers in 326 at-bats with the Padres in 2008, 17 in 430 at-bats with the Padres and A’s in 2009 and seven in 132 at-bats with the Mets last season.
This year, Hairston’s pace has been better. He is averaging a homer every 15.2 at-bats.
“It’s not a bad start,” Hairston said. “I’ll see if I can keep it going.”
