Marathon man at it again: Isner loses 34-game fifth set at French Open

PARIS — Playing in another marathon match at a Grand Slam tournament, John Isner lost to Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 18-16 in the second round of the French Open.

The match lasted 5 hours, 41 minutes. The last set alone took 2:28.

Isner won the longest match in tennis history two years ago, beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set at Wimbledon.

Thursday’s match was the second-longest by time in French Open history. The record is 6:33.
