Cannibal hunt ends in Berlin

An international manhunt for a gay Montreal porn actor — suspected of murdering a lover, chewing on his flesh and sending his body parts to Canadian political leaders — ended quietly yesterday in a Berlin Internet cafe.

“OK, OK, you got me,” Luka Rocco Magnotta said when police, flagged down by a cafe employee, came to arrest him. He was watching Internet news reports about himself when arrested.

The grotesque case came to light last week when a package containing a severed foot and addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper arrived at Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa.

Another package containing a foot and addressed to Canada’s Liberal Party turned up at a post office.

The packages were traced to Magnotta’s blood-soaked Montreal apartment, where police found a torso in a suitcase outside in a garbage dump.

The victim is believed to be Jun Lin, a 33-year-old Chinese university student he dated.

But Magnotta, 29, had fled Canada by plane on May 26 — while leaving a grisly Internet trail.

A video posted online showed a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up. The video also showed the attacker dismembering the corpse — while a song from the film “American Psycho” is heard in the background.

“We believe he filmed himself,” Montreal Police Commander Ian LaFreniere said last week.

Police initially suspected Magnotta had gone underground in France, using one of his aliases and male and female disguises.

Investigators said he once had plastic surgery to make himself look like the 1950s actor James Dean, and often dyed his hair, wore wigs and dressed as a woman.

But after he arrived in Germany, a staffer at the Internet cafe had no difficulty identifying him yesterday. “We said from the beginning that the Web has been used to glorify himself and we believe the Web brought him down,” LaFreniere said. “He was recognized because his photo was everywhere.”
