Hamstring caused Holmes to miss Jets practice

It turns out Santonio Holmes had a good reason to pull himself out of practice last week.

The Jets No. 1 wide receiver felt tightness in his hamstring, but did not reveal that when he spoke with the media. The hamstring injury kept him from participating in the team’s first mini-camp practice yesterday.

“He just knew it was tight,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “Veteran players know their body better than anybody. When they sense that ‘Hey, you know, I’m tight, I’m getting ready to pull [the hamstring],’ it’s obviously better to pull yourself out of the drill than sustain an injury.”

Holmes declined to speak with reporters Tuesday.

When he removed himself from practice last week during organized team activities it created a stir. At the time, he said he felt he was being overworked after missing time during a goodwill trip to Germany.

The Jets have a rash of hamstring injuries at the moment. Second-round pick Stephen Hill also missed yesterday’s practice with a tight hamstring.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis said he expects to have a conversation about his contract with the team’s decision-makers at some point.

“Sooner or later [a meeting] has to [occur],” Revis said. “I got two more years left so we’ll see and we’ll go from there. Whatever is best for me and the organization, we’ll get through it.”

Revis again would not guarantee he won’t hold out from training camp. He has said he would like a long-term deal.

In the quarterback watch, starter Mark Sanchez had a rough day. He completed just 2 of 9 passes during the team portion. He was sacked three times and nearly threw two interceptions. Backup Tim Tebow fared a little better, going 5-for-9 and getting sacked once. In fairness, the Jets had a number of their top receivers on the sideline with injuries.

Tebow finished second in a vote by the offense for the top weightlifter of the offseason. Tight end Dustin Keller was first.
