Basketball’s Telfair brothers claim NYPD has it in for them

Police deliberately tried to sully Brooklyn’s Telfair brothers by spreading a bogus story that a member of their clan assaulted a football coach at Lincoln HS, the Telfair family claimed yesterday.

Sebastian Telfair, 27, plays for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, and his brother Ethan, 17, is a Lincoln HS point guard who has a shot at NCAA stardom.

But the family says the NYPD is trying to thwart their hoop dreams through a years-long string of false arrests and intimidation.

“We’re really being attacked. That’s the truth of the matter,” claimed Sylvester Telfair, the 31-year-old older brother of the clan.

Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Telfairs’ claims.

The latest incident came Wednesday, when a Lincoln HS senior named Cavon Telfair — who is not related to the three brothers — was arrested on charges of assaulting football coach and dean Shawn O’Connor.

A Daily News story citing “police sources” wrongly labeled Cavon Telfair as Sebastian Telfair’s “kid brother.” Family members say that, taken with what they consider the false arrests of Sylvester and Ethan, the News story shows that police have it in for them.

“This is always happening to my family. I don’t know why,” Ethan said.

Last year, Ethan was busted on gun charges and for allegedly trying to bribe a cop. The family says Ethan pleaded guilty to the bribery rap in return for having the weapons charges dropped.

Sylvester Telfair sued the NYPD and the Correction Department in 2007, claiming he was falsely busted.
