Woman, 88, beaten to death in Bronx home

An elderly Bronx woman was found bludgeoned to death on the floor of her apartment this morning, fresh groceries strewn across the floor around her unconscious body and the front door unlocked, cops said.

Evelyn Shapiro, 88, was discovered by a relative and pronounced dead on the scene by first responders who arrived at the apartment at 9:55 a.m. Saturday morning, police said.

The grisly murder unfolded at the Pelham Parkway housing project on Williamsbridge Road in the Bronx.

“She’d walk around the neighborhood and say hello to everyone,” said Maria Lopez Cayon, 62, who was visiting her mother in the building yesterday and often spent time chatting with Shapiro. “It’s monstrous to kill an old lady like that. This used to be a nice neighborhood when my mother moved in 10 years ago.”

Shapiro was known among her neighbors as a friendly, quiet presence in the building, a woman who participated in senior trips at the Sue Ginsburg Senior Center in the neighborhood.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, cops said.
