Ryan wants more enthusiasm from Jets offense

Jets coach Rex Ryan noticed a difference between his defense and offense on Tuesday that bothered him.

During the team’s first mini-camp practice, the Jets defense was yelling and jumping around after every big play it made. The offense was more subdued, including after a beautiful touchdown catch by wide receiver Chaz Schilens. Ryan and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano are imploring the offense to embrace the F word — fun.

“I would like to see us more enthusiastic,” Ryan said. “On defense if a guy makes a play, 50 guys are running in from the sideline going crazy. I want the same kind of enthusiasm, and Tony talked about it [yesterday] to the offense. Chaz Schilens had an unbelievable catch and one guy goes over and gives him a high-five. This is a game and it’s football and it’s fun.”

The offense showed a little more spunk in yesterday’s practice, possibly because fans were permitted to watch practice for the first time. The offense has spent the spring trying to learn Sparano’s offense and looks a bit tighter than the defense.

* Another day, another round of Darrelle Revis contract questions.

Revis did not reveal much new but said he would not develop a lack of trust in the team if he is not given a new contract this summer.

Revis said the Jets told him two years ago the contract he signed was a “Band-Aid” intended to be redone into a long-term deal before the 2012 season. The Jets don’t seem to have any intention of redoing the deal, though, and may be looking at next year as the time to do it.

“Through contract situations with me these last two, I held out so it’s kind of the same situation coming up about the contract stuff,” Revis said, also referring to the contract dispute before his rookie year. “I have learned a lot from them. The thing about this one is just take my time and weigh my options. That’s how you have to look at it. You can’t look at it if I trust the Jets or not. It’s negotiations.”

Ryan would not touch the issue of whether he would like to sit down with Revis.

“I’m not going to get into the contract issue,” Ryan said. “Everybody knows how I feel about Darrelle.”

Comedian Adam Sandler did a conference call with sports reporters promoting his new film “That’s My Boy” that features Ryan. He dispelled one story that has floated around since last summer when the Jets were pursuing free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

The NFL Network reported that Sandler had helped recruit Asomugha at Ryan’s request.

“That wasn’t true,” Sandler said. “That didn’t happen. But I did hear that a few times … people would ask me on the street how I was doing it, and I would say I’m not a part of it. I think our defense is pretty smooth, we’re OK.”

Wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Stephen Hill were both limited again with hamstring issues. … First-round pick Quinton Coples had a lower back problem, Ryan said, but Coples was able to practice.
