Killers of Bronx grandmother, 88, may have been after her jewelry: police

The thugs who murdered an 88-year-old Bronx grandmother were apparently after the large amounts of jewelry she was known to wear, cops said.

Evelyn Shapiro, 88, was carrying groceries to her Bronxwood apartment Friday when the robbers pushed their way in. They beat her to death and made off with her rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces.

“The apartment was a complete mess . . . blood all over the place,” a source said.

“They beat her savagely.”

Neighbor Carmen Deleon said Shapiro “was a very nice woman. Always alone, but she always wore what looked to me like expensive jewelry.”

“She told me she’s afraid to leave it in the apartment because she might be robbed.”

Shapiro was discovered in a pool of blood inside her Pelham Parkway Houses home Saturday by her daughter and grandson.
