$750,000 settlement for woman injured by trash compactor

A woman who was severely injured by a trash compactor while working at a New York City housing project will receive $750,000 in a settlement reached today.

Ysabel Plasencia was an on-duty city Housing Authority employee and operating a large commercial compactor at a project in Astoria, Queens when her right arm was crushed after the machine malfunctioned in 2005, her attorneys said.

The settlement with Arrow Steel Inc. was reached shortly after opening arguments in her civil trial concluded in Brooklyn federal court, officials said.
