Mets still don’t know severity of Bay’s consussion

Jason Bay continues to rest with a concussion, but the Mets are no closer to knowing the severity of his injuries.

The Mets may get a chance to visit with the left fielder today, when it’s possible he will be at Citi Field for the first time since sustaining the concussion Friday night. Bay was examined by a specialist yesterday and will be evaluated again today.

“I don’t think we know how serious it is yet, and may not know for at least a few days,” general manager Sandy Alderson said before the Mets’ 5-0 win over the Orioles.

BOX SCORE

“Part of it depends on how quickly some of the more obvious symptoms dissipate, and right now we’re still waiting for all of those to clear.”

Scott Hairston started in left field for the second time in three games in Bay’s absence.

* Ruben Tejada (quadriceps) and Ramon Ramirez (hamstring) were both scheduled to begin rehab assignments for Single-A St. Lucie. Ronny Cedeno (calf) is probably the closest to a return. He was expected to play a fourth straight game for Triple-A Buffalo, but manager Terry Collins indicated Cedeno won’t return before the weekend.

* The Mets last night had their 10th annual Starlight Night, which benefits seriously ill children. Kassandra Rivera, an 11-year-old girl from Astoria, Queens, living with cerebral palsy threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Also, 13-year-old Carly Rose Soneclar, a Broadway and TV personality who is a longtime devotee to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, sang the national anthem.

* Tonight’s T-shirt promotion will honor Johan Santana’s no-hitter. The first 25,000 fans in attendance at Citi Field will receive the T-shirt. Also, the Stony Brook baseball team that made it to the College World Series will be honored before the game.
