Bar in ‘rape-cops’ case could be closed

The East Village bar whose surveillance cameras provided key evidence against two accused “rape cops’’ is in danger of going out of business.

A subcommittee of the local community board voted against extending the Heather’s bar’s liquor license after neighbors complained about excessive noise and crowds of smokers on the street.

The vote was taken last week after angry area residents convinced the committee that the advantage of having the drinking spot’s security cameras on the street did not outweigh the nuisance customers caused.

Earlier this year, Officers Kenneth Moreno and Franklin Mata were charged with rape after the cameras showed they repeatedly visited the apartment of a drunken woman they had escorted home.

They were acquitted of rape but convicted of official misconduct.

Bar owner Heather Millstone testified for the prosecution, saying the cops noticed one of the cameras and tried to avoid it.

The fate of her business now rests with the full board and the State Liquor Authority.
