Girls volleyball roundup: Lewis coach Rosenbaum earns 300th victory

Arnie Rosenbaum had to wait a little longer than expected to pick up his 300th win.

Injury-riddled Francis Lewis was stunned by Townsend Harris on Friday. But after a strong showing at the Clarkstown tournament Saturday, Lewis defeated Queens HS of Teaching, 25-10, 25-17, in PSAL Queens A6 girls volleyball Monday at Townsend Harris HS.

“It was a good way to do it,” Rosenbaum said. “Just going through all this stuff, I didn’t know what they were gonna do.”

Defensive specialist and top server Stacy Paickattu remains out with a hip injury. Star outside hitter Ragina Anthony can’t hit due to a thumb injury, but has been playing right side and serving. Right side/middle Lisa Camarago returned from an injury Saturday and is now playing outside. Setter Jessica Chung is still not 100 percent with a knee injury.

“It’s a makeshift lineup right now,” Rosenbaum said.

Anthony had five aces, Chung had 11 assists and Camarago added four kills and three digs for Lewis (1-2) on Monday. The Patriots’ five-year league winning streak was snapped last Wednesday by Cardozo.

Rosenbaum, a former MAAC Coach of the Year at LaSalle, now has 289 wins at Lewis in his 15 years coaching at the Fresh Meadows school. The other 11 high school victories came at Rye in 1990. Rosenbaum has won five PSAL city titles, but right now he’s just worried about getting the next victory.

“If we didn’t have the thing Saturday, I don’t know what we would have done [Monday],” he said. “It was good to give them some confidence.”
