Reyes leads NL batting race after Mets loss to Reds

Jose Reyes took the lead in the NL batting race on Monday with his eighth-inning double and he finally admitted that he’s thinking about the crown.

“I can’t lie to you when I see it on the scoreboard,” said Reyes, who went 3-for-4 in a 6-5 loss to the Reds at Citi Field. “I don’t want to put anything in my head, but no doubt I think about it with only two days left.”

Reyes (.33396), trying to become the first Mets player to win the title, leads Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun (.33393) by the tiniest of margins after Braun’s pinch-hit double last night, but Reyes was disappointed with himself after he was caught off second base in the eighth.

“I went too far,” Reyes said. “It cost us the game.”

BOX SCORE

Terry Collins said he will consider Reyes’ pursuit of the batting crown when filling out his lineup the next two days.

“It certainly would be something great for this organization,” Collins said.

Reyes said he wanted to play tomorrow, especially since it could be his final game as a Met.

“[Today] and [tomorrow] are gonna be tougher for me,” Reyes said. “I have to stay focused, but I’m gonna think about it.”
