Andy Rooney to end regular run on ‘60 Minutes’

Veteran journalist Andy Rooney will wrap up his tenure on “60 Minutes” after a 43-year run on the CBS news magazine, the Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

The 92-year-old will make his last regular appearance in his segment, “A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney,” on Sunday’s episode of the show.

An interview with Rooney about his long career in journalism by veteran “60 Minutes” correspondent Morley Safer will air before his farewell appearance.

“There’s nobody like Andy and there never will be,” Jeff Fager, CBS News chairman, said in a statement about the end of the Rooney era at the network, though he hinted the beloved newsman could pop up in occasional broadcasts.

“It’s harder for him to do it every week,” Fager said. “But he will always have the ability to speak his mind on ’60 Minutes’ when the urge hits him.”

Rooney had joined “60 Minutes” when it was created by venerable TV producer Don Hewitt in 1968.

His trademark segment, where he delivered satirical observations on quotidian issues, became a regular part of the news show in 1978.
