A dating site for vegetarians turned out to be a meat market.
Veggiedates invited users “to meet single vegetarian men and women looking for love,” but most of the users were carnivores, a British regulator said this week.
Vegetarians who paid for the service were never told that the site beefed up its dating database with nonvegetarians from other sites, the Advertising Standards Authority ruled, according to the Daily Mail.
Veggiedates “acknowledged” that the site shared a common database, and that “meat eaters comprised a majority of its users.”
Incredibly, the site contends it never implied membership was restricted “only” to vegetarians.
“A member could indicate they were vegetarian or not by ticking a box in their dating profile,” the site said in a statement.
“Members could then browse other members by looking at their profiles to see if they were also vegetarian.”
But the authority did not buy it.
“Because claims on the home page gave the impression that the Web site was for vegetarians, they were misleading,” the board ruled.
