Microsoft won’t bid for Yahoo

REDMOND, Wash. — Microsoft will not make a bid for Yahoo, AllThingsD reported Wednesday.

Microsoft executives have “taken pains” to make it clear that they are not going to be among the bidders in any significant manner, sources told AllThingsD, adding that the company is not even “considering” a bid, unless that means watching from a distance.

In addition, the Redmond, Wash., software giant has been communicating with bidders that — while Microsoft is interested in a stable Yahoo, given their search and advertising partnership — it would not commit to going in on a deal with any other parties.

If another party emerged with a winning bid, the company might consider making a token investment to help get the deal complete, sources told AllThingsD.

The comments follow a report earlier Wednesday from Reuters that Microsoft was considering a bid for Yahoo and could seek partners in a possible deal.
