Giuliani to appear in Entergy ads for Indian Point nuclear reactor

Entergy Corp. said Thursday that former Mayor Rudy Giuliani will appear in television and newspaper advertisements that will tout the safety of the company’s Indian Point nuclear power plant outside New York City.

Giuliani, who has worked for Entergy for several years as a consultant and adviser, will be featured in the ads, which will start running on cable television channels and in newspapers in and around New York and Albany, N.Y., starting next week, said Entergy spokesman Jim Steets.

“He’s a great guy, he’s terrific to work with,” Steets said in an interview.

Entergy, of New Orleans, has been struggling to win a New York water-quality permit it needs to obtain a federal license to continue operating the plant for several more years.

New York’s Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said the plant is too close to New York City and should be closed.

In August, Entergy CEO J. Wayne Leonard said the company aims to negotiate agreements with New York state officials over its plans to continue operating Indian Point rather than spend years in litigation. The plant, in Buchanan, N.Y., is about 45 miles from New York City.
