Rosie feels bad about Selleck ambush

REGRETS: Selleck & O’Donnell (WABC-TV)

Rosie O’Donnell has one big regret.

Days before the launch of “The Rosie Show” on the struggling OWN network, the controversial talk-show host says she is still kicking herself over a famous, televised ambush of Tom Selleck.

“In hindsight, if I had to redo [it], I would do it differently,” she admits.

He is “a kind man, who, for the rest of his life, has to be associated with me and that one event.”

Selleck was a guest on “The Rosie O’Donnell Show” in May, 1999, when TV’s reigning Queen of Nice went on the attack about his membership in the NRA.

“It was a week after Columbine,” she told reporters in a teleconference yesterday. “I was not really in my best place emotionally.

“I was pretty raw. It was the first time I was in what I perceived to be a position of power — which I thought came with fame. And I was really disillusioned to find out that it didn’t.”

O’Donnell, 49, says she was on antidepressants and couldn’t sleep for 10 days following the high school massacre in Littleton, Colo.

“I was overwhelmingly distraught in a manner that, my therapist said, was not specifically germane to the issue,” she says. “It was representative of a PTSD type of response. So I do feel bad for him — not for him, but for the way that whole thing played out in that he still has to sometimes answer for it, which I don’t think is fair.”
