Girls soccer roundup: Surging Poly tops Fieldston

Poly Prep’s late-season surge continues.

The Blue Devils have lost just twice in their last 10 games including a 2-0 victory over visiting Fieldston in Ivy League girls soccer Wednesday. Jessica Dahldorf headed in a Sam Domurat corner midway through the first half and Annie Hurwitz kicked home a Dahldorf free kick in the 77th minute for Poly Prep (6-6-4, 4-4-3).

The win moves them into a tie for fourth with Horace Mann and keeps the Brooklyn private school’s hope of a NYSAISAA bid alive with one game remaining against Trinity.

“This game was huge to keep us in the mix,” Poly coach Erin Early said. “If we didn’t win this game we basically could forget about having a chance at the playoffs.”

Her team began the year 0-4-2 and had gone 6-2-2 since Dahldorf moved from center midfielder to sweeper. Her speed and athletic ability in the back has led to wins over second-place Dalton and a tie and win against third-place Fieldston (6-5-2, 5-5-1). Poly’s losses during that span are to unbeaten Riverdale and Pingry.

“We struggled scoring,” Early said. “That’s our weakness this year, unfortunately. If we can give up none and hopefully get one here, get one there that’s how we are going to win.”

Riverdale 2, Horace Mann 1: Ali Hyman tallied both goals for Riverdale (14-0-1) in the Ivy League. Jackie Dworkin and Isabella Bertagna each had an assist. Sarah Heintz scored off a pass from Ali Steir for Horace Mann (4-4-3).

NYCAL

Columbia Prep 4, UNIS 0: Freshman Gabby Kahan punched home a Jess Bonaventura head-flick into the box only 19 seconds into the game to help spark Columbia Prep (17-2-0) to the inaugural NYCAL title. Branco-Lo added a goal and an assist, Madi Rosegarten and Leah Janover had a goal each and Carly Doyle added an assist. UNIS is 9-3-0.

CHSAA

St. John the Baptist 1, St. Francis Prep 0: Sarah Plowman scored the lone goal in the 35th minutes for No. 4 St. John the Baptist (8-6-0) in the first round of the CHSAA Nassau/Suffolk Class AA playoffs. The Cougars advance to play Kellenberg in the semifinals Friday. Kimmi Chacko made eight saves and Samantha Cobotic seven for No. 5 St. Francis Prep (4-9-0).

Mary Louis 4, Moore Catholic 0: Therese Boyle scored four times for Mary Louis (7-2-2) in CHSAA intersectional. Deirdre Ray added an assist. Moore Catholic is 2-7-1.
