New Mexico woman goes directly to jail after Monopoly game sparks stabbing

SANTA FE, N.M. — A New Mexico woman was in dire need of a “Get Out of Jail Free” card Thursday after cops took her in for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend during a feisty game of Monopoly.

The board game bust-up happened as Laura Chavez, 60, played with her partner and her 10-year-old grandson, according to The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper.

Tempers became frayed as the game went late into the night, with Chavez reportedly accusing her 48-year-old boyfriend of cheating.

Police say she flew into a rage, smashing her beau over the head with a bottle before repeatedly stabbing him with a kitchen knife.

When officers arrived at the Santa Fe property in the early hours of Wednesday they found the victim “bleeding heavily from his head and right wrist area,” Deputy Kurt Whyte told The New Mexican.

The grandson had gone to bed when the attack happened but he was able to confirm the argument was sparked by claims of cheating. He also said the couple had been drinking.

Chavez was held on charges of aggravated battery on a household member with a deadly weapon, battery upon a peace officer, assault upon a peace officer and resisting or evading a police officer.

Her bond was set at $5,000, a sum she had been unable to come up with as of Wednesday night. Her boyfriend remained in the hospital.
