The Double

What can you say about a dull spy thriller that gives away its big “secret’’ both in its trailer and the film’s title? Not that you wouldn’t figure this out well before it’s unveiled 30 minutes in.

Richard Gere sleepwalks through the role of a former CIA agent who is recalled to duty after a senator who had business dealing with Russians is assassinated.

Gere’s ex-boss (Martin Sheen) forces him to work with a young FBI hotshot (a miscast Topher Grace) who’s convinced the killing was executed by a top Russian operative who mysteriously disappeared at the same time Gere retired.

Gee, wonder to whom “The Double’’ could possibly refer? Michael Brandt’s soporific thriller is making a token stop in theaters before its January DVD debut. Miss it if you can.
