Girls soccer roundup: Cardozo upsets No. 10 Brooklyn Tech

The game had a familiar feel to Tim Demirayak. His Cardozo team’s play reminded the coach of its tough games in Queens A-IV.

“We played great,” the first-year head man said. “We played a couple of good games this year because of good competition and we played a very similar game. It was one of our better games. We kept ball control. We won the 50/50 balls.”

The 23rd-ranked Judges won the game as well, 2-0 over host No. 10 Brooklyn Tech through steady rain and wind in the opening round of the PSAL Class A girls soccer playoffs Saturday morning.

Stacy Gomez scored the game’s first goal just two minutes into the second half. She ran onto a through ball up the right sideline and put the ball into the upper 90 from 20 yards out. Dozo (7-5-1) got the second 10 minutes later when Katlyn Merino dribbled through two defenders and put in a blast from the top of the box.

“The first goal was critical,” Demirayak said. “We knew the wind was now howling against us. The weather was really a factor. As soon as we got that goal I said to myself, ‘They need now two to win. There is no way they are going to get two.’”

The Engineers (11-2-0), winners of Brooklyn A-VII, nearly got one back midway through the half. Judges backup keeper Elizabeth Enriquez kicked a hard shot from inside the box away and made a save on the rebounded attempt. Starting sophomore goalie Caitlin Arboleda arrived late to the game and Demirayak stuck with the senior.

“It was so bad,” he said. “It was rainy. It was 33 degrees. It was pouring the whole day. I said [the shot] is going in because it was low.”

His team remains in the draw and faces the winner of Sunday’s game between No. 7 Tottenville and No. 26 A.P. Randolph in the second round Friday.

LaGuardia 5, Columbus 0: Megan Caccavale scored four times for No. 5 LaGuardia (11-3) in the first round of the PSAL Class A playoffs. Raina Dziuk added a goal and Erika Yamazaki, Gabriele Davis and Natalie Turner Wyatt dished out an assists. The Athletics play the winner of Sunday’s game between No. 12 Fort Hamilton and No. 21 New Dorp in the second round Friday. No. 28 Columbus is 5-7-1.

Long Island City 7, DeWitt Clinton 0: Alison Dowdle recorded a hat trick and Stephanie Escala had two goals and an assist for No. 8 Long Island City (13-0) in the first round of the PSAL Class A playoffs. Geraldine Huisa had a goal and four assists. Andrea Giron chipped in a goal and Jasmine Penuela added an assist. The Bulldogs face winner of Tuesday’s game between No. 9 Susan Wagner and No. 24 Canarsie in the second round Friday. No. 24 Clinton is 7-6.
