Countdown to the Breeders’ Cup: Turf Sprint

The Post will profile each of the nine Breeders’ Cup races to be run Saturday at Churchill Downs. The Countdown to the Cup spotlights potential nice-price winners as handicapped by reporter Ed Fountaine and columnist Ray Kerrison. Good luck.

3-year-olds and up. Grade 2. Purse: $1 million. Distance: Five furlongs, turf. Post time: 3:21 p.m. Bets: WPS, Exacta, Trifecta, Superfecta, Daily Double, Pick 3

ANALYSIS: If at first you succeed, why not come back and try again? That might be the theme for the Turf Sprint as last year’s winner Chamberlain Bridge and the 2009 winner California Flag are both back for another shot at the jackpot.

Even though both are now 7 years of age, they are battle-hardened, big-money winning warriors. They’re in peak form, they love the 5f trip and may be the ones to beat.

LIVE LONG SHOTS: Perfect Officer, 12-1, ran the highly fancied Havelock to a length in the Woodford at Woodbine, suggesting he could reverse placings today. Broken Dreams, 20-1, merits a look.

THE BET: Steve Asmussen’s Regally Ready is 2-for-2 at Churchill and won Woodbine’s Grade 1 Nearctic last out. He’s the morning line 3-1 favorite and will take some beating. Bet Regally and Chamberlain Bridge over the longshots in the exactas.
