Radio war brewing between Yankees, Mets

The Yankees yesterday announced they have extended their just-expired radio deal with WCBS-AM for this coming season. That deal would then lapse next October. That’s the same time the Mets’ WFAN deal can be renegotiated, according to an industry source.

The Yankees can then put their rights up for bids and could sell to ESPN Radio or WFAN, leaving the Mets to find a new radio home.

ESPN Radio now has another year to search for a 24-hour, AM or FM clear-signal station purchase, then enter the bidding for Mets or Yankees rights.

Strong-signaled WEMP 101.9 FM, owned by Merlin Media, also has been rumored to be in the hunt for a New York baseball team.

At roughly $14 million per season, Yankees rights have not been profitable for WCBS.

WFAN pays approximately $7 million per season for Mets rights.

The Yankees also announced yesterday John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman are expected to return to the booth next season.
