Cross country roundup: Molloy girls win third straight B/Q title

Archbishop Molloy completed a three-peat in dominant fashion.

The Stanners swept the top four spots en route to a third straight CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens girls cross country title Tuesday at Van Cortlandt Park. Molloy collected 28 points, second-place St. Francis Prep had 58 and third-place Mary Louis tallied 66.

Stanners senior Kathleen Wood won the 4K race with a time for 16:18.59. Paulina Stefanowski was second in 17:20.85, Melissa Fesler third (17:30.25) and Rebecca Verrone fourth in 17:41.80.

St. John’s Prep’s Kelsey Papanicolaou was fifth with a time of 18:02.18. St. Francis Prep’s Kelly Pabon came in six in 18:14.83, Bishop Ford’s Jamila Jone seventh in 18:15.17 and TMLA’s Cristina Martello was eighth in 18:34.53.

The Molloy boys team wasn’t as fortunate in its meet. They fell seven points shy of Bishop Ford (53) and was the runner up for the Brooklyn/Queens title. St. John’s Prep was third with 70 points.

Ford junior Devin Rocks won the 4K race at Van Cortlandt with a time of 13:26.56. Cathedral Prep’s Connor Gallagher was second (13:31.30), Gabriel Vazquez third (13:48.32) and Ford’s Chad Messam was fourth with a time of 14:09.25. Teammate Biko Augustine was sixth with a mark of 14:25.56. The Stanners top finisher was Dillon Scibelli who was fifth in a time of 14:20.99.

Archdiocesan boys champion Ryan Phillips posted the best time of the afternoon with a mark of 12:58.41. Teammate Dmitri Zuccarello was third in 13:23.08, but it wasn’t enough to earn his team the crown. The Knights (52 points) placed second behind Monsignor Farrell, which had 30 points. Third-place Iona Prep had 71, behind a second-place finish in 13:15.56. The Lions swept spots four through nine: John Bentivenga (13:24.75), Alex Lo Presti (13:30.75), Steve Arnone (13:35.64), John Luccesi (13:44.00), Brian Trees (13:44.20) and Dan Lewandowski (13:47.00).
